Thieves are beginning to target the third row seats of sports utility vehicles (SUV’s) for theft.

Third row seats of SUV’s (Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, etc.) are easily and quickly removed from the vehicles and can be sold online, at flea markets or to salvage yards for as much as $1,000.  Although they usually weigh 75-100 pounds, they are easily removable from a target vehicle.

Third row seats of SUV’s currently lack a traceable serial number.  They are in demand by SUV owners whose row of seats has been damaged or worn out.  They are frequently stolen at high density open air parking lots such as shopping malls, hospitals and airports.  Thieves sometimes hit three or four vehicles in the same incident.

Crime Prevention Recommendations

  • If a third-row seat isn’t being used regularly, simply remove and store it.
  • Engrave or etch the vehicle identification number (VIN) onto the seat.
  • Secure the third-row seat with a cable lock.
