“Take Me Home” is a program initially developed by the Pensacola, Florida Police Department to better assist individuals with cognitive or developmental disabilities who may need extra help communicating in an emergency situation.

"Take Me Home" is a program initially developed by the Pensacola, Florida Police Department to better assist individuals with cognitive or developmental disabilities who may need extra help communicating in an emergency situation. This kind of help may be necessary if the individual is unable to speak or properly identify themselves, or if they become disoriented or act in a manner that could be misinterpreted by first responders.

The program is a free service available to any resident of a community, of any age, and is aimed at individuals with autism, down syndrome, developmental or cognitive disabilities. The program is also intended to assist senior citizens who suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s.

If the person is registered with the program, officers can look for their information in the computer database. Using the person’s physical description and photograph, responding officers can determine who they are, where they live, and call someone to come and get them.

This useful program is rapidly being adopted by several law enforcement agencies throughout the nation. I recommend anyone interested to check out the Frisco, Texas website for their information about Take Me Home. They have a good program enrollment form on their website.
